Sweden - Government backs EU minimum wage directive, despite rejection by union confederation - December 31, 2021

The government dropped its opposition to a proposed EU directive to strengthen wage protection in member countries after judging the new rules would not threaten the collective bargaining model widely used in Sweden. It was a significant development as Sweden has, along with Denmark, been one of the most vocal opponents of the proposed directive on adequate minimum wages. However, at its 29th congress the union confederation LO demanded that the EU legislators respect the EU Treaty and not assume wrongful powers in the field of wage formation.
