Netherlands - Largest hourly wage increase in 12 years - April 30, 2021

According to Statistics Netherlands (CBS), hourly wages rose by 3.1% in 2020, marking the largest annual increase since 2008. Hourly waged employees were often paid more despite working less overall due to the pandemic last year. In general, the total amount of wages paid decreased by 0.5% last year, totalling €385 billion. The decrease was largely attributed to the NOW subsidy which partially compensated employers for their employees’ wages during the pandemic. In 2020, the total number of working hours fell sharply by 3.4%.
