Launching the Living Tariff Tool in Kenya: Paving the Way for Fair Work in the Platform Economy

The rise of the platform economy has brought new opportunities for freelance and independent work in Kenya. However, gig workers often face challenges in ensuring fair compensation and securing their rights. WageIndicator and GIZ are proud to introduce the Living Tariff Tool, an innovative initiative designed to address these challenges and empower platform workers across the country.

From Nairobi's bustling streets to the rural villages, millions of Kenyans have embraced the flexibility and independence of the platform economy. But for many, this flexibility comes at a cost. Unpredictable income, lack of social security, and unfair platform fees can make earning a decent living an uphill battle. The Living Tariff Tool is a game-changer, providing a vital resource for Kenyan platform workers to negotiate fair compensation and build a secure future.

Kenya's gig economy is booming, with the online segment alone employing over 36,000 workers and projected to balloon by 32% in just five years. This rapid growth underscores the increasing importance of platform work, offering flexibility and income opportunities to many. However, challenges lurk beneath the surface.

While gig work provides primary income for nearly 90% of participants, the majority face low wages, often between 10,000 and 30,000 Kenyan Shillings monthly. Furthermore, income instability and lack of social security leave many workers financially vulnerable. This highlights the need for comprehensive solutions that address both the online and offline segments of Kenya's $30 billion gig economy, ensuring fair compensation, income security, and worker protections for this growing workforce.

The Living Tariff Tool is more than just a number on a screen. It's a powerful tool that empowers Kenyan platform workers to take control of their livelihoods. Imagine a delivery driver knowing their fair hourly rate before accepting a job, or a freelance writer negotiating with confidence. The Living Tariff Tool equips them with the knowledge and bargaining power to achieve this. Join us to learn how this innovative tool can revolutionize the platform economy in Kenya, creating a future where gig work means good work.
