Story 7 - Manvika - WageIndicator Intern - India

These are really unprecedented times and they can be quite overwhelming. How have you been doing?

That’s so true! I have my ups and downs honestly. I’ve always struggled with keeping in touch with people and I still am. It was difficult in the beginning when online classes and exams were still a thing but working with WI has made the transition a whole lot easier with the only problem being my recurring headaches due to screen time. Overall, I think I am coping better now.

Do you have a routine that helps you make sense of time nowadays?

Unfortunately, I have no routine in place except for the fact that I do 6-9 hour of work for my WageIndicator internship during the day. I’m unable to do other things that I want to do and it’s driving me crazy. I’m really struggling with the unpredictability of each day and to find a balance between all that is going on in the world and in my life. I know for sure that I’d be able to manage all of that if I was at college, but at home, I can feel myself getting lazy, and I just can’t stick to it.

How do you find it to be to keep in touch with everybody?

There are ups and downs on this front as well. You don’t get to see your friends or give them that hug they need or have them give you that hug that you need. With that feeling of connection missing, it can get really difficult to calm people down and a super small misunderstanding can turn into a huge fight. However, some ups have been how I’ve gotten closer to my parents and my friends and I now value the time we have even more.

Have you learnt something new about yourself this year?

Yes! I’ve learned two things, one, that I’m extremely dependent on people for comfort and two, that I need a routine. I’ve learnt that I need to have conversations every day with people I care about to keep myself going. Talking to people and spending time with my friends was always the part of my day that I looked forward to the most. Now that I’m at home, all that has changed. Friends and family have their own things going on and sometimes, I end up feeling lonely. Sometimes even the comfort of my own home can feel uncomfortable when you are in lockdown.

"My biggest lesson has been that we should not expect too much and that the timing will never be right"
