Story 6 - Kapish - WageIndicator Intern - India

How have you adjusted to the pandemic?

We’re experiencing a very different form of work life. There is a lot more pressure and a lot less fresh air. I am doing fine, but I’ve recently realized how important breaks are. Just some fresh air or a couple of conversations with people.

How do you stay in touch?

I am not a big fan of social media. Video calls are great but they also annoy because you can’t actually be with the person. But that’s how I try to keep in touch. With mental health being excruciatingly important, I have been really trying to call people once a day and make sure they’re fine. It helps me feel normal and keep sane.

Your laptop had recently crashed. How did you handle that in a time when everything is online?

I guess this has been the weirdest experience for me. It made me realise my dependency on things around me. And I also realised that things we consider permanent, like a laptop, I realised that it’s fine - one device can’t dictate your entire life.

Has the vision you had for your life changed?

There’s been a readjustment in how we look at things, from our futures to how we graduate to everything. It’s as simple as seeing people with masks on all the time. I still have my dreams but there is more technology in them, and more human interaction as well. I’ve learnt that it only takes some time until we as humans start adapting and living alongside a situation. For the Covid-19 situation, when there were fewer cases, we were more scared. We as humans fear things we don’t know. But the moment we start knowing them, their impact reduces, for better or for worse.

What do you see happening in the future?

That the world will go on the way it used to. Although I see myself wearing a mask for at least a year more. I see myself getting out of the house relatively less. I imagine most of my meetings will be online. I think there aren’t going to be any drastic changes, but more small adjustments.

"We take so many things for granted. Only when they are taken away do we realise their value."
