Switzerland - Union confederation criticises attack on cantonal minimum wages - April 30, 2026
The National Council's Committee for Economic Affairs and Taxation (WAK) wants to undercut cantonal minimum wages. Like the Council of States, it wants cantonal minimum wages to no longer apply to employees covered by a generally binding collective agreement (CA). According to the Swiss Trade Union Federation (SGB), with its decision, the WAK is preventing thousands of workers from receiving a living wage. It is also deliberately violating the constitution. The National Council had already decided last summer that cantonal minimum wages should no longer apply to CA employees. The Council of States had recently advocated for a modified version of this low-wage policy. Now, the National Council's WAK has endorsed the Council of States' version.
