Serbia - Union warns about economic uncertainty - April 30, 2026
Workers are marking International Workers’ Day facing economic uncertainty, a rising cost of living, and deepening social inequality, the Association of Free and Independent Unions (ASNS) said in its Labour Day proclamation, warning that a large portion of the population is on the brink of poverty. The Association noted that the rising prices of food, energy, and basic necessities have cancelled out wage increases, while the wealth gap, it is estimated, continues to widen. The Association pointed to what it described as the consequences of failing institutions, the overreaching influence of large corporations and banks, and growing public discontent.
