Romania - Government consults unions on public-sector pay law - April 30, 2026
The Government plans a new public-sector pay law. The interim labour minister said that after fiscal parameters were clarified, the Government would begin broad consultations with trade-union confederations, professional groups and unions. He argued that the consolidated draft should result from extensive debate across the public pay system. The minister said the reform should ensure that no current public-sector income is reduced, reorganise pay grids after many previous amendments, and reduce the ratio between the lowest basic salary and the president’s monthly indemnity from 1:12 to 1:8. He also said future public-sector pay growth would be decoupled from increases in the national minimum wage.
