Pay survey for data workers in Kenya
The output of this research is an online dashboard and a research report by WageIndicator. The Data Labelers Association will use the empirical insights to fuel a better-informed debate in their mission for decent conditions for data workers.
Project Description
Data workers prepare data used for training AI and check the results. They do this via online (crowdwork) platforms and via Business Process Organizations (BPOs). It is well known that this group of workers operates under precarious conditions, with pay that is generally (far) below standard.
Despite this knowledge, there is little empirical data available on what these workers earn and what the conditions relating to pay are.
This is an important research gap, as data is needed to have a well-informed debate about the conditions of these workers and to work towards a responsible AI supply chain.
This is why the WageIndicator Foundation, in collaboration with the Data Labelers Association, is conducting a survey on ‘pay for data workers’. The workers are reached via the association's communication channels. The output of this research is an online dashboard and a research report by WageIndicator. The Data Labelers Association will use the empirical insights to fuel a better-informed debate in their mission for decent conditions for data workers.

Role WageIndicator
WageIndicator Foundation will lead the design of a survey to capture the working conditions and earnings of data labelers in Kenya, and prepare the survey to be rolled out by the partners. Upon data collection, the team will engage in analysing the data and presenting the findings to advocate for betterment of data labelers' working conditions and earnings.
