WageIndicator Foundation now offers information to workers in 196 countries - March 29, 2021
Currently, workers in all countries around the world can access the minimum wage that apply to their situation. In April, the latest national websites will be launched. This allows workers in all 196 countries, from Guinea to Qatar and from Spain to Russia, to use the information that WageIndicator Foundation offers.
National websites
Workers can use their national website, available in one or several official languages, to get information on their position on the labour market. This may reveal whether they are being paid the minimum wage or the prevailing wage for their profession. For three quarters of all countries, WageIndicator has also calculated living wages, which provide an insight into the wages needed to provide for basic needs. In addition, for many of the 196 countries, the complete labour legislation has been mapped out, which makes it possible to check whether the employer complies with the law.
This information is not everywhere as accessible as in the Netherlands, WageIndicator's country of origin. That is why the WageIndicator websites play a crucial role in many of these countries. This is the case, for example, in Indonesia, where the much-discussed Omnibus Law appears to be affecting workers' rights. The information pages on the Indonesian WageIndicator website Gajimu.com about this law were visited en masse when it was introduced. The data of WageIndicator Foundation is also important in Ethiopia, where the textile industry is extensive. Despite the war that is taking place there, WageIndicator has managed to increase wages in the textile sector, together with local unions.
Increasing transparency
WageIndicator Foundation collects information on salaries and labour law worldwide, through on-site surveys and through its websites. Research is also carried out in cooperation with local universities, supported by the international team of WageIndicator Foundation and a large number of interns from all over the world. This data is then analysed and compared. This work contributes to the ultimate mission of the foundation: to increase transparency in the labour market worldwide, for the benefit of employees, employers, social partners and all other workers.
