New Minimum Wages in Botswana - August 10, 2013

Government has announced new minimum wage rates for employees in various industries and trades for the year 2013/2014 as per Statutory Instrument No. 55 of 2013.

The revised minimum wage are effective from June 1, 2013.

According to a press release from the Ministry of Labour and Home
Affairs, employees under construction, exploration and quarry industries, wholesale distributive trade, manufacturing, service and repair trades, hotel, catering and entertainment trades, garage, motor trade and road transport, will have their minimum hourly rate adjusted from P4.20 to P4.50.

The rate in the retail distributive trade has been adjusted from P3.70 to P4.00 per hour, while for watchmen employed in these industries and trades, the rate has been revised to P3.80 per hour from P3.50.

For security guards employed by security companies, wages have also been adjusted to P4.50 per hour, while employees under the domestic service sector will now have as their minimum hourly rate, P2.50 instead of P2.30

The release further states that those in the agricultural sector will
be paid P500 from P445 per month. Employers are advised to adhere to the new policy by ensuring that they do not pay their employees below the stipulated new minimum wage rates.

Failure to do so will be violation of Section 1389 of the Employment
Act Cap. 47:01. The offence is punishable in terms of Section 151 of the same act.
