United Kingdom - University staff to strike over job cuts - September 30, 2026
Staff at the University of Essex will strike over plans to slash jobs and services, UNISON union says. It’s the first time admissions advisors, IT technicians, admin workers and other professional services staff have walked out over the proposals to cut 400 posts. The £ 24 million (€ 28 mln) cuts, which have already forced the closure of Essex’s Southend campus, will hit the quality of students’ education and the support available to them, warns UNISON. Staff say they’ve been left with no choice but to strike after university leaders refused to properly engage with them or listen to suggestions to minimise job losses.
