United Kingdom - Council workers strike over pay - August 31, 2026
Members of Unite, UNISON and GMB unions employed by the council-owned company Great Yarmouth Services took five days of strike action on 6–12 August in a dispute over pay. The workers provide refuse collection, street and beach cleaning, grounds maintenance and cemetery services. The three unions rejected a 3.3% pay offer and demanded an increase of 20%. Most workers earn only slightly above the minimum wage, while workers performing comparable jobs in Norwich, Broadland and Lowestoft receive around 20% more. The strikes disrupted household and commercial waste collection, street cleaning, landscaping and cemetery services during the peak tourist season.
