Turkey - Union demands state action against systematic wage theft - August 31, 2026

DİSK union confederation issued a statement, titled "Wage is a right; it cannot be seized," demanding that the state guarantee payment of wages owed to workers, particularly in mining, construction and shipbuilding, where DİSK said unpaid wages have become systemic. The union pointed to the country’s ranking among the world’s ten worst countries for worker rights on the International Trade Union Confederation's Global Rights Index since 2018. DİSK called for the Unemployment Insurance Fund and other public mechanisms to ensure timely wage payment and to recover unpaid sums from non-compliant employers, accusing the state of suppressing labour activism rather than enforcing existing protections.
