Turkey - Minimum wage has eroded - August 31, 2026

The research center of the DİSK union confederation, DİSK-AR, reported that the real value of the minimum wage had eroded by 5,576 lira (€ 100) in purchasing power terms by July 2026. The research highlighted stark inequality in how inflation is experienced: the bottom 20% of earners receive just 6.4% of total income, yet spend 29.2% of it on food, while the top 20% earns 48% of income but spends only 12.4% on food. DİSK-AR said rising rent, housing and transport costs were forcing lower-income households to cut food spending just to cover other essentials, deepening cost-of-living pressure on Turkey's lowest-paid workers.
