Spain - Strike at electricity company - February 28, 2026
Trade unions organised a national demonstration in Madrid during the ongoing negotiations for the collective agreement at Iberdrola. The mobilisation was called by UGT FICA, CCOO Industry and ELA amid a deadlock in talks with the company over wages and purchasing power. The strike is reported by the unions as the first in the company’s 125-year history. Negotiations for the new agreement began in January 2025 and cover around 9,000 workers employed by Iberdrola in electricity generation, networks and energy services. Unions say the company’s proposal does not adequately compensate for inflation and would continue the loss of purchasing power experienced by the workforce in recent years.
