Spain - Private school staff strike on first school day - September 30, 2026
Unions representing staff at state-subsidised private schools (concertada) in Galicia called a strike for 9 September, the first teaching day of the 2026–2027 school year. They cited the "zero willingness" of the regional Education Department to set a negotiating calendar. Despite numerous mobilisations by staff last school year, the unions said, the department had not convened the tripartite negotiating table. It had also not answered their letters or made any gesture to reverse the situation. The sector employs around 7,000 people and teaches about 30% of Galician pupils below university level. The strike was part of a wave of education protests at the start of the school year.
