Spain - Forest firefighters on strike - August 31, 2026

More than 800 forest firefighters employed by the Aragón public company SARGA began an indefinite strike on 18 August. The action was called by CCOO, UGT, CGT and OSTA after mediation ended without agreement. Workers report shifts lasting more than 20 hours, insufficient rest, incomplete crews and inadequate food, water and protective equipment. Some operational bases lack basic facilities such as electricity, running water, toilets and air conditioning. The unions are demanding additional recruitment, safer working-time arrangements, improved professional classifications and a salary supplement reflecting the risks and physical demands of the work.
