Slovenia - Unions demand referendum on intervention law - September 30, 2026
On 24 September, trade union confederations announced they had collected the 40,000 verified signatures needed to call a subsequent legislative referendum on the Act on Intervention Measures for the Development of Slovenia (ZIURS). The law was adopted in May. The unions argue it mainly benefits the highest earners and opens the way to cuts in wages, pensions and healthcare. They object in particular to provisions on labour law, including the automatic termination of employment once a worker qualifies for an old-age pension. ZSSS union president said the unions had opened the way for people to decide their own future.
