Slovakia - Supermarket staff prepares strike - August 31, 2026

Employees at retailer Kaufland entered official strike readiness after collective bargaining broke down. The union had sought better financial compensation and changes to how working hours were organized, but talks stalled even after mediation by a government-appointed representative. Following the failed mediation, the union launched a confidential vote among workers on potential strike action. Kaufland disputed the union's framing, saying it had already met most demands and presented a financially improved compromise proposal, while stressing its continued commitment to dialogue and normal store operations.
