Poland - Protest against store closures - February 28, 2026
Trade unions protested in Warsaw after supermarket chain Carrefour announced plans to close several stores and launch a collective redundancy process. According to Solidarność union, up to 250 workers could lose their jobs as a result of the restructuring. Despite several meetings between Solidarność and local management to secure terms that exceed the statutory minimum, Carrefour instead offered symbolic vouchers ranging from € 140 to € 215 to be paid from the company’s Social Benefits Fund. Solidarność rejected the offer as inadequate and said it would be a misuse of the fund.
