Norway - Court ruling on overtime for part-time workers - March 31, 2026
A court has ruled in favour of a part-time retail worker employed by Coop, marking a significant development in the treatment of part-time workers’ working time and pay. The case was brought by a member of the HK union, who challenged the long-standing practice whereby part-time workers do not receive overtime pay for additional hours worked unless they exceed full-time working hours. The court found that this practice can constitute unequal treatment. The worker had been employed on a part-time contract but regularly worked beyond his agreed hours without receiving overtime compensation. The court awarded compensation of around NOK 205,000 (€ 17,500), including holiday pay, for the unpaid overtime.
