Malta - Two new collective agreements for healthcare workers - September 30, 2026
On 11 September, the Government signed two collective agreements with the Malta Union of Midwives and Nurses (MUMN). They give around 180 healthcare workers better allowances, more training and new career opportunities. One agreement covers dental surgery assistants. The other covers phlebotomists, phlebotomy technicians, and decontamination and sterilisation technicians. Most of them work at Mater Dei Hospital and Gozo General Hospital. The agreements also create a new coordinator role within each profession, opening up routes for career progression. Earlier this year, MUMN had complained that nurses and midwives were the lowest-paid health professionals while also bearing the brunt of staff shortages.
