Latvia - Unions oppose amendments to labour law - April 30, 2026
Representatives of the Latvian Confederation of Free Trade Unions (LBAS) and its member organizations participated in the meeting of the Parliament’s (Saeima) Social and Labour Affairs Committee, which considered amendments to the Labour Law. LBAS opposed the proposal of the Latvian Chamber of Commerce and Industry, which provided for determining that if, upon termination of employment relations, the employee has not returned the employer's assets transferred to him or has transferred them damaged, the employer has the right to withhold the value of these assets from the employee's wages. According to LBAS, it is unacceptable for the employer to unilaterally determine the value of assets and make deductions without the employee's consent.
