Latvia - Teachers’ union opposes transition to 40-hour workweek - June 30, 2026
The Government plan to transition to a 40-hour workweek as early as 1 September of this year has come as an unpleasant surprise to the teachers’ union LIZDA. According to the union, this means a small reduction in the salaries of approximately 40,000 teachers. The ministry informs that the transition will only take place next year. The head of LIZDA admitted that conceptually it is necessary to move towards a 40-hour workweek, but the ministry intends to do so from September, which means "a minus sign for many tens of thousands of teachers".
