Ireland - Public servants begin work-to-rule - September 30, 2026
From 30 September, more than 100,000 public servants, including nurses, special needs assistants and Department of Social Protection staff, are taking part in a work-to-rule. They will meet their contractual obligations but will not provide unscheduled cover, work overtime or take part in training. The nurses' union INMO said its members will focus solely on safe patient care and will not work unpaid extra hours. SIPTU members in 30 hospitals are taking part. The union said the Government has failed to provide a credible forum for pay negotiations and that the campaign will lead to strike action on 14 October unless meaningful talks begin. Primary teachers in INTO and secondary teachers in ASTI start their action on 5 October. Almost all schools are expected to close on 14 October. The Government says it is willing to resume talks, but without preconditions.
