Hungary - Social care workers rally for 25% pay rise - September 30, 2026
On 18 September, workers from the social care sector demonstrated outside the Prime Minister's Office in Budapest, demanding an immediate 25% pay rise and better working conditions. The rally was organised by the Social Sector Workers' Union (SZÁD), which says the growing pay gap is making the situation of social care workers untenable. The Prime Minister received the union's proposed pay scale, but asked for patience and said the Government is working on the 2027 budget. He said the Government is fully aware of the sector's problems and that even a 25% rise would not be a real solution, adding that a decision is still needed on whether next year's increase comes in one step or two. The unions said they were ready to meet Government members the following week.
