Greece - Seafarers strike over port congestion - August 31, 2026
The Pan-Hellenic Union of Merchant Marine Sailors (PENEN) held a 24-hour strike at Rafina port on 3 July 2026, cancelling all fast ferries sailings to Andros, Tinos, Mykonos, Paros and Naxos. The action followed a first-ever seafarers’ rally at the port on 26 June, when crews staged a three-hour work stoppage and voted to escalate. According to the union, a chronic shortage of docking positions forces vessels to anchor offshore daily, adding to crew workloads and fatigue. PENEN called on ferry operators to compensate crews for this extra strain rather than simply demanding safety and operational fixes at the port.
