Germany - Union demands 5% pay rise for metal and electrical industry - September 30, 2026
On 23 September, IG Metall union adopted its demands for the upcoming bargaining round covering more than 3.7 million workers in the metal and electrical industry. The union is seeking a 5% pay rise over 12 months. It also wants a profit-sharing scheme for workers at "boom companies", agreements to secure jobs and production sites, and a social component to help the lowest pay groups. The same 5% demand applies at Volkswagen, which has its own company agreement. The union points to very uneven conditions across the sector, with a crisis in the car industry and mechanical engineering but strong business in medical technology and aerospace.
