France - Public sector workers strike over pay - September 30, 2026
On 29 September, tens of thousands of public servants, including teachers, firefighters and healthcare workers, marched in cities across the country to demand higher pay and better working conditions. The strike was called by all eight public sector unions: CGT, FO, CFDT, UNSA, FSU, Solidaires, CFE-CGC and FA-FP. Unions said about 300,000 people took part nationwide. According to the unions, the Government plans to freeze base salaries for state employees in 2027 to save € 2 billion. They are demanding general pay measures, a significant rise in the index point and its indexation to inflation. The CGT leader gave the government 48 hours to reverse the planned cuts before her union decides on further strike action.
