EU Sources - Flexible work brings longer hours - August 31, 2026
Flexible working can improve autonomy and work-life balance but also exposes workers to longer hours, irregular schedules and constant availability, according to a new Eurofound report on working-time quality. One in five workers in the EU teleworked or had control over their working time in 2024. Remote workers nevertheless remained more likely to work overtime, during their free time and without sufficient rest than workers based exclusively at their employer’s premises. Frequent contact outside working hours was among the factors with the strongest negative effect on stress, mental health and work-life balance. High workloads were also a major cause of poor working-time quality.
