Cyprus - Hospital nurses stage walkout over overcrowding - September 30, 2026
On 16 September, nursing staff at Larnaca General Hospital held a spontaneous one-hour work stoppage in protest at longstanding problems including overcrowding and staff exhaustion. The action was called by the general nursing staff branch of the public servants' union Pasydy. According to the union, the immediate cause was severe overcrowding in recent days, which left patients waiting for hours in the accident and emergency department for a bed. The union said nurses had reached the limits of professional burnout and were being required to work continuous overtime to meet demand. It warned that the situation put both the physical and mental health of nurses and patient safety at risk.
