Croatia - Unions demand action on staffing and safety in prisons - August 31, 2026

Public-service union SDLSN called for urgent measures to improve staffing, pay and safety in the prison system following an assault on a prison officer at Zagreb Prison Hospital on 25 July. According to the union, it was the fourth assault on a prison officer in less than a year. SDLSN said chronic staff shortages, overcrowded prisons and inadequate safety measures had placed increasing pressure on the workforce. The union demands higher pay for all prison-system employees, an increase in the allowance for difficult working conditions and clearer definitions of roles and responsibilities.
