Bulgaria - Union opposes plan to cut public sector wage costs - May 31, 2026
The Confederation of Independent Trade Unions in Bulgaria (CITUB) opposes the planned linear 10% reduction in spending on wages and social security contributions as of 1 September. According to the union, there is no clarity on how such a reduction could be applied in sectors where average pay is barely around € 1,000 per month and where a serious shortage of personnel already exists. According to CITUB, excluding certain public sectors from the scope of the measure undermines the idea of overall efficiency and creates a new sense of injustice. The union insists on applying a unified approach to income policy in order to overcome the discrepancies in pay between different systems within the public sector.
