Belgium - Unions oppose cuts to civil servants’ sick pay - August 31, 2026

Public-service unions opposed Government plans to reduce income protection for federal civil servants during long-term illness. VSOA/SLFP and ACV/CSC Public Services argued that the reform would penalise workers rather than address the working conditions contributing to long-term sickness. Under the current system, statutory federal civil servants receive 21 days of fully paid sick leave annually. Unused days can be carried over to create a reserve that protects their full salary during longer periods of illness. The draft reform approved by the federal cabinet would stop the accumulation of additional days from 1 January 2027.
