Belgium - Prison staff on strike - June 30, 2026
A strike has been underway in prisons since 29 June, according to ACOD trade union and a spokesperson for the Prison Service. The strike is reportedly the result of a dispute in several French-speaking prisons, where dialogue between local management and the trade unions has become impossible. A strike has been called in all prisons in solidarity. According to union CSC/ACV Public Services, the dispute arose after the unions repeatedly raised the issues and consequences of overcrowding. The union furthermore emphasised that the issues are not a matter of isolated incidents but regularly occurring problems.
