Belgium - 24-hour strike hits prisons over overcrowding - September 30, 2026

The common union front confirmed a strike in all prisons on 25 and 26 September. The action is driven by persistent prison overcrowding. staff shortages, and problems with infrastructure and security. According to the procedure, consultation with the Justice Ministry had to take place within four days of the notice being filed. After that meeting, the Christian union ACV and the socialist union ACOD confirmed that the strike would go ahead. It followed earlier action: the unions had already staged actions in prisons from 6 to 11 September after talks with the cabinet of Justice Minister and the prison administration produced no satisfactory guarantees.
