The walkouts follow a record year for strikes, with a total of 622 stoppages recorded across the country in 2024. Backed by some of the biggest trade unions, the protests come as workers demand better pay, improved working conditions and contract renewals, highlighting rising tensions in the country’s labour market. Workers from the FAISA-CONFAIL union, who recently rejected a renewal agreement, staged a four-hour strike. Workers in the education sector are also participating in the protests.
