Iceland - Union criticizes reform of work permits - November 30, 2025
The Icelandic Confederation of Trade Unions ASÍ has submitted a comment on the Minister of Justice's draft bill on amendments to the Act on Foreigners and Employment Rights of Foreigners, which, among other things, deals with the issuance of residence and work permits. The union makes serious comments on the plans that the Government will no longer be obliged to seek the opinion of the relevant trade union when issuing temporary work permits. In the current system, the trade union movement receives information about the work permits that are issued and can thus actively monitor the conditions of those who come to work here from countries outside the EEA, not least by visiting workplaces.
