Cyprus - New safeguards for public officials and health workers - December 31, 2025
Public service unions have welcomed new legislation that classifies assaults against a law enforcement officer, public official, nurse or midwife as a specific criminal offence. The measure, adopted by Parliament, responds to rising concerns about violence faced by workers delivering frontline public services. The nursing branches of PASYDY argue that violence at work has become an increasingly serious problem, driven by staff shortages, excessive workloads and growing pressure on public healthcare services. While the measure is legislative, unions see it as part of a broader struggle to improve working conditions and ensure a safe working environment for frontline workers.
