The strikes come amid collective bargaining over pay and other conditions for some 3.9 million workers in the automotive and other manufacturing sectors. The union wants to encourage employers to speed up negotiations. The union stresses that the employers' current offer is inadequate and that employees need a higher pay to strengthen the economy. Young people, in particular, should be taken into account in the negotiations. In the current round of wage negotiations, IG Metall is demanding a 7% pay increase and a surcharge of € 170 for trainees. In contrast, employers have made an offer of only 1.7% from July 2025 and 1.9% from July 2026.
