Germany - Arbitrator’s verdict in construction industry - April 30, 2024

After three fruitless rounds of negotiations for the approximately 930,000 employees in the construction industry, arbitration was requested. On 19 April 2024, the arbitrator made a decision. Accordingly, wages were increased by € 250 per month on 1 May 2024, followed 11 months later by another 4.15% in the West and 4.95% in the East. The term of the agreement is two years. The training allowance in the first year of training will be € 1,080 in both East and West, and the allowance in the consecutive years of training will be raised similarly. The bargaining commission of the union IG BAU has approved the proposal. The employers' arbitration committee rejected the proposal. The relevant committees of the construction companies could still approve the proposal within the next 14 days. The union warned that if they don't agree, industrial action is called for, since the mood among construction workers is highly explosive.
