Bulgaria - Two thirds of workers earn below subsistence - April 30, 2024

According to recent data from the Confederation of Independent Trade Unions of Bulgaria (CITUB), the financial strain on households continues to intensify. CITUB unveiled striking statistics during a press conference from the report ‘Monitoring of Consumer Prices and Living Wage’ published by the Institute for Social and Trade Union Research, Education and Training (ISTURET). Data reveals that 65.3% of workers fall short of the living wage benchmark. Despite a 14.7% increase in the average income between February 2023 and February 2024, 32.1% of individuals, amounting to 820,000 workers, earn wages below BGN 1,000 (€ 511).
