Seven associations of trade unions that are a part of the Economic and Social Council, the main industrial relations forum, had called for raising the minimum wage. Given the economic recovery, unions demanded that the minimum wage should go up by 5% to 630 euro net in 2017. Earlier on opposition parties in parliament asked an improvement during 2017 in two steps, leading to a minimum wage of 700 euro in September 2017.
