In its release, the ONS note that it is ‘not possible to say how much of this increase is due to greater recognition of the term ‘zero-hours contracts’ rather than new contracts’. The trade union confederation TUC stated that zero-hours contracts sum up what has gone wrong in the modern workplace: anyone on such a contract has no guarantee of any work from one day to another.
