The main characteristics of the labour market are a high level of union density, high labour force participation rate, long work hours, as well as late retirement. The trade union movement has a high level of organisation and also a high level of centralisation in confederations, with great capacity for cooperation and coordination. The existence of large umbrella organisations for both workers and employers in the private sector has made nationwide collective bargaining possible, with an active participation of the central government. In most cases collective bargaining takes place between the Confederation of Labour (ASÍ) and the SA-Business Iceland (SA). Bargaining rights however reside in individual unions.

English: http://www.fafo.no/pub/rapp ...

For more information, please contact the editor Jan Cremers, Amsterdam Institute for Advanced Labour Studies (AIAS) cbn-aias@uva.nl or the communications officer at the ETUI, Mariya Nikolova mnikolova@etui.org.
