In line with general practice, the European Commission attempted to raise salaries in 2011 to adjust them to actual living costs in Brussels and civil servant salaries in Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Spain and the UK. However, member states objected to the pay hike on the grounds of austerity policies implemented in the member states and advocated for by the European institutions. The European Court of Justice has now ruled that the member states have the right to block the wage increase.

English: http://www.euractiv.com/euro-finance/european-top-court-blocks ...

For more information, please contact the editor Jan Cremers, Amsterdam Institute for Advanced Labour Studies (AIAS) cbn-aias@uva.nl or the communications officer at the ETUI, Mariya Nikolova mnikolova@etui.org.
