They demanded that the government systematically\r\nincrease funding for the education sector so that its share of Gross Domestic\r\nProduct (GDP) becomes comparable with other EU countries by 2014. Trade\r\nunions representing teachers and other school employees stated that if the\r\ngovernment fails to hear their demands and respond appropriately by the end of\r\nSeptember, they will go on strike: “It will be announced either as a one-day\r\nwarning strike or as an unlimited strike,” said Jozef\r\nLužák, chairman of the teachers’ union. The unions are also asking that the\r\nsalaries of teachers be increased to a level ranging from 1.2 to 1.6 times the\r\ncountry’s average monthly salary, whereas this level is currently about the\r\naverage.
