Project title | Mywage.org/Ethiopia for living wages in the garment sector |
Funded by | FNV Mondiaal |
Duration | 1-1 2018 - 1-1-2021 |
Goal of the project | Commitment of factories to pay living wages within a timespan agreed with the trade unions; collecting prices of items from the cost of living survey, in and around the 3 urban, industrial centres selected for this project; calculate living wages based on these prices and publish them; |
Commitment of factories to improve compliance with labour law within the timespan agreed with trade unions; let workers check compliance with labour law (online and face-to-face), and report the results to trade unions and to employers, offering support and information to achieve compliance. Compliance with labour law is low. Face to face surveys with workers and hr-managers is the first step towards awareness. Next step: formulate improvements on the basis of the findings. Then: measure implementation of proposed improvements. The final step is to publish the improvements.
Commitment of factories to conclude, use and improve Collective Agreements; collecting CBA’s, assess clauses and offer model clauses to improve conditions to comply with minimum wages and labour law, and further improve beyond the legal minimum; Collective Agreements covering the textile and garment industry in Ethiopia will be collected and included in the global WageIndicator Collective Agreement database; these agreements will be uploaded full text, assessed and scored. CBA's which are added to the WageIndicator database are checked on over 100 items from the labour law to find out if they are below or above legal requirements. On factory pages we will be able to show the relative levels of various working conditions using the WageIndicator assessment framework. We expect this transparency to support improvements beyond legal requirements.
